Spotlight: Santo Domingo

Established in 1498, the colonial town of Santo Domingo on the island of Dominican Republic, had the first hospital, university and cathedral in the New World.


The city’s layout was given a grid pattern, which became the blueprint for other cities around the new world.

Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor

Many of the sites are located in the La Ciudad Colonial (Colonial Zone) and is  a major tourist attraction area.


Fortaleza Ozama

Spanish goth in all its glory, it is where African, Native American and European cultures crossed and where the Dominican monk Antonio Montesino started his appeal for native people’s rights.
